ASEAN Economic Bulletin

The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies launched the ASEAN Economic Bulletin in July 1984. Since then, its increasing circulation has demonstrated its value as a forum for exploring aspects of economic and political interaction and co-operation among ASEAN countries, as well as ASEAN's relations with its major trade partners in the world. The Bulletin publishes articles, short papers, and reviews on the economics and political economy of ASEAN and its member countries. It also provides documentation on ASEAN economic development and co-operation, and on research activities relating to the Asia-Pacific region. The Bulletin is published three times a year, in April, August, and December.

Asian Journal of Social Science (formerly the Southeast Asian Journal of Social Science)

Published continuously since it was launched in 1973, the Asian Journal of Social Science provides a forum for exploring issues in Southeast Asian societies. Contributions are from anthropology, economics, geography, history, language and literature, political science, psychology and sociology.
The Asian Journal of Social Science is unique in three ways:
(i) It is the only Asia-wide journal of the social sciences. All other journals dealing with Asia tend to be area studies journals and focus on a particular discipline or part of Asia. The Asian Journal of Social Science, however, covers the Asian region and has a social science focusing on theoretical issues of the social sciences in the context of Asian empirical realities;
(ii) The Asian Journal of Social Science does not restrict itself to coverage of Asian topics. Articles written by people from the region are also accepted.
(iii) The journal publishes book reviews and review essays of works published in the various languages of Asia as well as other languages in which there is social scientific literature on Asian topics.

Inside Indonesia was set up in Melbourne by the Indonesian Resources and Information Program (IRIP) in 1983. The Journal of Burma Studies is the only scholarly journal in the world to publish exclusively on research and writing about Burma (Myanmar). The Journal of Vietnamese Studies

Journal of Vietnamese Studies is a new journal that promotes and publishes original social science and humanities research about Vietnamese history, politics, culture and society, as well as Vietnam-related topics that have traditionally been set apart from mainstream area studies scholarship such as the Vietnamese diaspora and the Vietnam War. In addition to full-length research articles, the Journal of Vietnamese Studies includes book reviews, communications with the editor, and occasionally also translations of important Vietnamese language documents and texts. Additionally, a regular section reserved for book reviews and longer review essays serves to provide a running diagnosis of the state of the field and to establish an arena for deliberation, conversation and debate about both new work and significant intellectual trends within Vietnamese studies as a whole.
Starting with Volume 3 (2008), Journal of Vietnamese Studies has moved to triannual publication. The new publishing months are February, June, October.

Kyoto Review of Southeast Asia

The Kyoto Review of Southeast Asia has been launched to promote exchange among the intellectual communities of Southeast Asia. Our primary goal is to bring news of important publications, debates, and ideas into region-wide circulation through lively and accessible writing. We also want to encourage more sustained engagement between university-based intellectuals and those working in NGOs, journalism, and cultural production.
Each issue is organized around a theme and reviews recent work, especially books published in the region and in local languages. Recognizing that mutual inaccessibility of national languages is an important barrier to deepening knowledge of neighboring countries, we use translation to facilitate informed discussion.

SOAS Bulletin of Burma Research

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) is a multidisciplinary research institute attached to Kyoto University. Southeast Asian Visions - a collection of historic travel narratives

A collection of European travel accounts of pre-modern Southeast Asia from Cornell University Library’s John M. Echols Collection. The site provides online access to more than 350 books and journal articles written in English and French. The works in the collection were selected for the quality of their first-hand observations and, together, provide a comprehensive representation of Southeast Asia. Along with their narratives, these accounts include some 10,000 images, drawings, photographs, prints and maps, many of them in color.

SEA Digital Library Project

Work on the library commenced at NIU Libraries and around the world in October 2005 to provide free access to archives of textual, still image, sound, and video resources, covering both historical and current information from the region.
The projects include:

• Supporting upgrades to an online bibliographic index at Thammasat University in Thailand, while creating an interface to access the index and providing a full-text article delivery service;
• Supporting a project at Khon Kaen University to preserve and digitize fragile palm leaf manuscripts from northeastern Thailand;
• Creating an archive of historical photographs covering a century of life in Cambodia;
• Training seminars for librarians in the Philippines at the University of San Carlos, Cebuano Studies Center, covering the latest techniques in preservation, conservation, and digitization that will result in the creation of an online archive of unique images and textual materials;
• Creating a video archive of a currently influential television program from Indonesia;
• Digitizing rare early printed works in the vernacular languages of the region;

Supporting the Living Memory Project to create a video archive of interviews of former political prisoners in East Timor; and Funding a project at Ohio University to create a free, online access interface for the Berita Database of journal articles and other resources from Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region.

The Dutch East Indies in photographs 1860-1940

A collection of the Koninklijk Instituut voor taal-, land- en volkenkunde

The years around 1900 marked the heyday of Dutch colonial rule in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Territories outside Java were brought under Dutch rule and the economy was thoroughly modernized. Thought was also given to the future of the indigenous population and its impact on the relations between the Dutch and the native people.

The collection consists of some 3000 photographs from the period between 1860 and 1940. Most of them were taken by professional photographers who took pictures of landscapes and street life, in addition to photographing houses and factories and taking portrait and group photos. Some of them even took to the road to record all the facets of the Dutch East Indies.

The Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre was founded in 2006 to provide accessible information about the ethnic peoples of Laos and their traditional arts.

As a private, non-profit institution, the Centre is a museum and resource centre dedicated to the ethnic cultures of Laos.  Located in a historic building in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Centre’s exhibitions feature ethnic clothing, household objects, religious artefacts, and tools.  Our objective is to promote understanding of the lifestyles and traditions of Laos’ ethnic diversity.

The Centre’s permanent exhibition features seven ethnic groups.  Each display highlights a distinct cultural aspect of that ethnic group. Temporary exhibits featuring specific ethnic sub-groups, themes, and arts from northern and southern Laos will commence in mid-2008.
